Changing from business to residential British Gas

We bought our house in December 2025 which was an airbnb. (business tariff on British gas)

The property was not listed on the Royal Mail website, so we paid North Yorks Council £60 to do the street naming (now completed) and also get it changed with the council to residential (now completed)

British Gas will not change us to residential because the address on the Royal Mail site does not match the gov.uk site (where you check council tax band). How do we get it changed on the gov.uk site???

I have sent BG a copy of street naming certificate and also confirmation from council that we are residential.

How do we stand legally??

Probably far quicker to change to a better energy supplier: BG are one of the worst !

Is this a case of the property bring known on Gov.uk as "Sea View" and with the council as "1, Sea Road"

I've added properties to the Royal Mail data base and that is quite straightforward

I had to deal with this when I volunteered at CAB both water and utilities were at business rates as it was previously a shop in a house that was converted back into a house. It took a few phone calls and a formal complaint to sort it out,

You've not said anything previously about being unable to change supplier, just that BG haven't let you swap from a business account to a domestic one.

You could try switching to a supplier with less terrible customer service, like Octopua or EON, then ask them to change you over to domestic?

(Probably phone or email first to explain what you're hoping to do. They should be able to advise.)

It is a British Gas Lite business account (inherited as previously stated) You cannot call them - that is making me very angry) you can only chat online to someone in a far off land!!

If anyone has any legal advice, as I feel like we are being held to ransom

The council (council tax bill) and royal mail match. On the gov.uk (check council tax band) it has an additional entry line of "the straits" and until that is removed, BG won't transfer us to domestic

also anything to do with gov.uk etc - can your local mp help?

Who has told you this? Small businesses switch energy suppliers all the time.
