Switch from Octopus to Eon - smart meter functionality?
I wish to change suppliers but am concerned that if I do then I will end up having to do manual readings all the time instead of the smart meter doing it all automatically.
Is there a way of checking whether my meter is compatible with the new supplier?

Unless it is a SMETS1 meter it should switch over fine, even the majority of those switch over fine. There is a very low percentage of issues after switching but they are usually resolved fairly quickly, no guarantees for anything in life though.

Note that there have been some issues with Octopus EV tariff customers switching to EON Next EV tariffs recently. EON have had difficulties making the right smart meter connections.
It doesn't sound like you're an EV tariff user, but if you are you should be aware of this.

Thanks for the quick replies - it looks like this:

Thats a smets2 meter from c2019. So normally shouldnt be an issue, as if one supplier can access via DCC, all should. But there are a couple of threads here with EOn failing to be able to adopt new meters and get readings automatically - many months later.
So you might want to check those out if switching to a smart TOU 1/2 hrly billed tariff.
(Interesting that the Kaifa hub fl100 adaptor power extension / shoe mounting to allow the comms hub to sit off your meter has property of British Gas on it, had read only Octopus used them and with actual Kaifa meters - from reports on one site few years back.)

I have read one thread where the problem making a transition from Octopus to Eon was resolved by a call to Octopus. Octopus had to intervene manually to "let go" of the authority to read the meter remotely.

Thanks for the replies, seems like given the price-differential on the tariffs it may be well worth taking the risk. I shall be back later with a photo of the meter at my OH's house to see if that is suitable too….

I agree with the others; if you're not an EV tariff user, the risk of your meter becoming dumb on a switch to EON is pretty low.

An E.on 'community coordinator' has recently posted about this widespread problem and what to expect by way of remediation:

In this post from 2018 @matelodave said his AS300P was SMETS1 but was capable of being connected to the DCC.
