Portable aircon

Hello all. I hope you're doing well and coping with the HEAT :(

I've decided to buy a portable aircon. <drum roll>

I know you guys can help me decide which one to buy. 'Cos you are all amazeballs.

I really want one for my bedroom, so its a reasonably small ish room with a window and an ensuite.

Any ideas and advice would be really really welcome

Thanks🤩

I bought an AEG AXP26U339CW (I think in normal talk that is the Comfort 6000) last year for about £400. Works fine for a smallish room.

The sort that only has one hose is really inefficient. They blow hot air outside through of that hose. That's good. But that air they are blowing out is the chilled air from your room. And by sucking air out, they draw warm air from the outside into your room, through open windows, cracks around the door or whatever. So they are constantly warming up the air in the room by drawing in outside air, while trying to cool it at the same time.

Two hoses is much better. They suck outside air in through one hose, heat the air with heat from your room, then blow the hot air back out again. That leaves all the coolness in your room.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

@Ectophile - a two hose portable aircon? I didnt realise this existed! A while back I purchased a dehumidifier which is fabulous. I should have been more smart and purchased an aircon PLUS dehumidifier back then!

I'm completely bamboozled by the Shark and Dyson offerings. Surely they are simply very expensive fans….or have I missed something?

The biggest problems with portable air con ....1. They are noisy. 2. They are heavy to move around. 3. Hanging the hose out of the open window is not very efficient. I've had one, thought it was awful and now wouldn't touch one with a bargepole. Definitely not recommended ( by me).

I had one very briefly, like I plugged in for a few minutes and decided it wasn't for me. It had clearly been dropped at some point (possibly during shipping), and the fan was rubbing against the cooling fins. Sent it back for a full refund and never bothered to get another one.

Neighbour has one with the hose hanging out of the window. I can hear the hose banging around in the slightest of breezes, and the constant drone of the fan is tiresome.

Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

I had the same problems, it's very loud - like washing machine during spin. Main issue is to get this window frame so it's more efficient - if you just stick out the pipe of head size through window a lot of hot air will be coming in - and the window covers are flimsy.

Temperatures are rising so worth looking into long term solution. Portable aircon with window cover would cost around £300 and you can get a proper one for under £2000 - which can also be used for very cheap heating in winter, it's very quiet so you can sleep with it, very efficient, doesn't take space, don't need to move it - and they're are heavy..
