Excess insurance

Hi, I was upsold excess insurance that cost an additional €388.98 at the Europcar desk in Barcelona which was to cover a Collision Damage waiver of €4000 and a Theft protection of €4000 however I have seen that we already had this covered through Rental cars as I had added on the full protection insurance when booking. This was our first time hiring a car and I was quite flustered after flying so didn't realise this was already covered which I though it was but the guy made worry about this €4000 excess for both. Is there any way I can challenge this to get the money back?

Probably not, it was your responsibility to know what you were already covered for.

For future reference you can take out separate annual car hire insurance that covers Europe for around £50

Don't think that a refund is possible, you were sold insurance coverage, you were covered for the duration of the car hire, you have "consumed" the product.

You hired the car via a third party so it's fairly likely Europcar has no knowledge of what the intermediary has or hasn't sold you.

Ultimately with third party CDW you would have to authorise the €4k on a credit card, and in the event of damage you then have to pay the €4k then reclaim it from the insurance. You wouldn't be the first person to realise they dont have a card with a €4k limit spare to put the authorisation on or can't afford to be €4k in a hole whilst awaiting it to be reimbursed by the insurer.

At this point, from what you've said, they've done nothing wrong and you simply bought something of limited value
