For Schengen countries you need to renew by 21.12.26. You won't be able to enter a Schengen country after this date. For the Caribbean your expiry date is still relevant but you probably will have to renew 6 months before the July 2027 expiry date (Jan 2027).

Welcome to the club of people who have had to lose the thick end of a year's passport validity because of the change in travel rules.

Don't forget that you need to submit your old passport when you apply for a new one, don't leave it until the last minute (month?) before you renew.

    Read this article: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/passport-renewal/

This explains about passport expiry and should help.

Each country, outside of the schengen at least, has its own rules so things can be talked of in general but no one is going to list the rules for every country in the world… for a start there'd probably be an argument about how many countries there are.

Back in the days before their demise Thomas Cook provided an A4 sheet of countries with appropriate passport and visa etc. requirements - I still have ours from our last holiday with them.

It would be useful if major operators like TUI and Jet2 could provide a similar guide.

Many stopped during Covid given rules could change daily; certainly when we went to the Caribbean 3 official governmental websites for the country had very slightly different rules despite two have been updated on the same day and the third being updated the day before… we just followed the strictest interpretation of all of them

The other issue from their point of view is it has a significant risk of creating a liability if they get it wrong. For example with a collleague the other day, the agent asked him if he has a British passport, he said yes, they gave wrong advice. His passport looks like:

But the agent seemed not to appreciate that there are several places in the world that issue British passports and so said he would need an ESTA. Thankfully it was that way round but had he been going to Thailand then the advice he didnt need a visa could have gotten expensive for the company when he gets denied boarding.

Indeed, passport rules have become a maze of regulations in more recent times.

When I was a laddie I was included of my parents joint passport - no photo, only name, place and date of birth.

Mind you that was in the Middle Ages 😁

It's a Bermudan passport but the travel agent simply said a British passport which a Bermudan, BVI, Caymans and a list of others are all "British".

They are an experienced traveller so it was a non-problem but it highlights the risks travel agents would run if they decided to give advice on entry requirements rather than referring you to specialist services. Lax terminology could end up costing a lot
