about 3 weeks ago I plucked up courage to do my tax self assessment. I used to have an accountant but finances are simpler now so I thought I'd give it a go. I am due a refund which I'm really pleased about. I had a niggly feeling that I'd paid too much tax last year but I suppose we all think whatever tax we pay is too much. My bank account is showing the refund as pending. Hooray! Rather less exciting but eminently sensible is that the refund is being spent on work to our gutters, drainpipes, soffits and fascia's. Oh and the rest is going to be put towards a 4 day break 🏝️

Great stuff on getting the tax return done and the refund - as long as your income isn't complex it's far less fearsome than most folk think isn't it, and the earlier you get it done the better was always my theory!

thanks all for endorsing my Mrs Sensible approach to an unexpected influx of money. In the past that would have gone on shoes, handbags and earrings and I would have wasted the rest 🤣.
EH - when I took my pension and lump sum and carried on working part time for a few months and sold a property that wasn't my main residence it completely messed my tax up. I think HMRC thought I had really maximised my income permanently. All sorted now and much simpler with much less income to account for.
in July we managed to take 2 steps forward with the horrid bit of our overseas family - we navigated a complex official set of procedures. This month the idiots abroad are being obstructive and obnoxious. However, nothing else will go on until September as that country grinds to a halt now so we are going to forget about it for a few weeks.We are going away for a couple of days by the coast where hopefully it will be a bit cooler. Just about budgeted for as it was a spontaneous booking. MrBC wandered off into cyberspace and found a good deal when he was meant to be buying light bulbs for my dad 🤷♀️

It always annoys me having to claim a rebate, they’re quick to come after you if you underpay, but aren’t so swift when you overpay!
