New occupant has new broadband contract

A friend moved out of his house in Feb 26, still in contract with EE for broadband until September, paying monthly at £30 pm Contacted EE who said that as he is still in contract he woudl still have to pay the £30 pm until September.

A new tenant has moved in and set up broadband with a new supplier…EE have now emailed saying they want the rest of the contracts payment in full. Can they do this? He has not missed any payments but cant pay the remaining amount in one go.

He hasnt transferred his account as where he has moved to already has broadband

Moving out but leaving the broadband active is not normal. What was the new occupant expected to do, have no broadband access until your friend's contract had expired?

  • EE were told that he was moving out and the house would be vacant, thats when they said he couldnt leave the contract

He could have ended the contract but would have had pay the remaining payments, which was their choice not to do. As far as I can see, your friend will have to find some way of finding the required amount, or let it default.

    Can they do this?

    Yes.

He has a contract with EE, which has now been terminated early. He is liable for the relevant early termination fee.

These companies often have hardship payment support, I'm sure your friend can request to be put on a payment plan.

Moving out of an address and paying for broadband you can’t use until the end of the contract normally fails when a new occupant moves in and orders their own broadband as ordering this will usually cease the old occupants broadband account , that’s the way the system works , and any early termination fee is due they get tracked down to pay it , what’s more leaving active broadband that someone else could start using possibly doing illegal things and it woukd be in the previous occupants name .

TBH , no company should say to keep paying monthly for services in an address they have moved out of …what’s more , if for example there were 10 months left , £30x10 = £300 is what paying monthly will cost in the long run ,but 10 months ETC will be much less , maybe around £100-£150 but that’s ‘due’ immediately, although normally an arrangement can be made to pay it back over a period of time.

EE were advised the house would be vacant, entirely down to the OP's friend in this case.
