A canal boat isn't a "yurt or a log cabin".

It is fairly well known that living on a canal boat in winter means having good insulation and good heating. Heat loss through a metal hull into near-freezing canal water takes a lot of heating to keep the interior at a comfortable living temperature. Living on a canal boat can be lovely, but with insufficient heat in the winter it can be a nightmare.

Your link about water filters confirms the point. Fliters alone are insufficient.

I can't remember who described the experience as something like "sitting in a cold bath while ripping up tenners".

Those homes in Manchester are for homeless people. Whilst living there they are provided with additional support too (helping to kick a drug addiction or finding a job). The land was donated and many Manchester-based organisations have provided their time free of charge too. It really is fantastic what they are doing.

These homes are most definitely not open market houses for sale and were never intended to be.

I'm with Troubled Tart on this.
We all imagine our micro house or log cabin to be like those seen in the US (and Eastern Europe).
They're in places that have very little in the way of people.

We could arguably allow things like this in remote parts of Scotland and maybe Wales and England. But those places are few and far between.

And people don't want to live remotely. They want to live in a town. And they want facilities.

I'm happy to stay in a log cabin for a few weeks a year, hunting and fishing. But it's not sustainable full-time.
