Without knowing anything about the owner and how social they are it's hard to tell.

If it's a large family with a lot of kids and family is an hours drive away then it'd be odd not having a washing machine. If it's a single person who spends a lot of time caring for an elderly parent, then fitting a washing machine just before moving would be pointless.

As said, we also don't know where they are moving to. It may be somewhere that already has one, so getting one for a couple of months is a waste of money.

Not everyone can fit one themselves or have the budget to buy or fit one to just leave it there in a couple of months.

I'm also not sure why it'd hint to any problem with the pipes - presumably the rest of the taps work fine? On the plus side, if there's a washing machine sized hole you should be able to get a good look at pipes that are normally hidden, and if brave enough you can turn on the inlet to see how much water sprays across the room.

I can't imagine the seller being pleased with that idea! and if there is a problem with a stiff tap that you can't then turn off there would be a real problem!

Hence the 'brave enough' part, but yeah maybe it wasn't clear enough that it wasn't a serious idea. Opening an unconnected valve in someone elses houses is a terrible idea.

The old one broke and they have had it removed? I'd be getting the solicitor to ask.

I didn't realise my current property didn't have a washing machine fitted, just kind of expected it would but didn't notice until after I'd offered. It wasn't a deal breaker as I had wanted to refit the kitchen anyway.

I've been using the local laundrette in the meantime, it's actually quite good because their industrial machines do a full wash in under an hour!

Don't worry - most washing machines will be plumbed to the kitchen waste (if in a kitchen). The plumbing is pretty simple.

What manner of 'issue with the pipes' do you imagine they're hiding? Either the pipe transmits water or it does not. If it does not a plumber will fix it in an hour. If it does, you're laughing. Either way.

In the months before I moved house last year, not knowing how long it was going to be until completion and knowing that moving was going to be physically difficult my 14 year old fridge freezer broke and so I had no fridge or freezer for several months, my washing machine was on its last legs and if it had given up would have gone and not been replaced too. I ordered both new to be delivered to my new house. I'd not think it suspicious at all just the joy of moving house.

Could be interesting when the survey comes back in. You'll no doubt have many further issues that you might feel are suspicious and conspiring:

    • What about the boiler?
    • What about the hot water cylinder?
    • What about the fire?
    • What about the space for the fridge?
    • What's in the loft?
    • What's in the water tank in the loft?

I was rather hoping that my washing machine would conk out before we moved so I could get a nicer one. 5 years on it’s still going strong.
OP-don’t read too much into it. I’ve taken (still do sometimes) washing round to my parents. When my brother was house hunting one place he looked at might not have had plumbing for a modern machine and I told him he could drop washing round to us.

Many years ago viewed a very old small house refurbished by a builder. No washing machine in the kitchen, no room for one either & zero room to install one anywhere else.

Also know of someone in a tiny modern house with no washing machine & no room for one. They take their washing to a parent. Been there for probably 18 years….

So… I would be asking….where does the washing machine get plumbed in…as I do know people that had to put one in the shed as no where else for it to go…& do you really want to be traipsing out in the rain to sort the washing machine? 🧐
