Anxiety about long drive

Why on earth would you make a comment like that???

This is very sound advice and I was going to post something similar myself. Coming back from London at that time of day could easily run into some road work disruption but these can be avoided by taking different routes which the sat nav will show.
OP just have confidence in your driving ability and the sat nav technology. You will make it home at a reasonable time.

I agree with the suggestion of using live mapping on a phone. Plan the route in advance while connected to WiFi, so the phone can download the maps.
Then on the day your friend can check for hold ups on the way back and if necessary use an alternative route. (Don't fiddle with the phone yourself while driving, it's illegal.)
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
Getting back for the two year old ought not to be a significant concern.
They should be left with someone appropriate/responsible who is able to look after them until such time the OP returns home - whether that's 10:30pm, midnight or 2am...

Perhaps the OP is more concerned than the 2 year old.

If you don't drive a lot esp. on motorways then go for a motorway outing to get back into the way of driving at 70mph
Ensure you check the car oil, tyre pressure etc. to minimise chance of a problem on the road
Set the destination in a free navigation app like Waze or Google Maps so it'll take the strain of navigation
Leave plenty of time for the trip down so you're not stressing about getting there in time for the event starting
Take bottles of water to stay hydrated in the car
If you start to feel tired on the way back, stop and have a good rest at a service station

Because it's true? The child will be fine as he/she will presumably be with a trusted person.
Even if it's the next day, the child will be fine.

Where does this anxiety come from? As long as you drive defensively and follow the traffic rules, you shouldn't have any problems... especially since you have 15 years of experience.

Generalized Anxiety disorder is a debilitating condition that often gets worse as you get older. The main treatments are CBT and SSRI antidepressants. It can be spiked by an incident but it's an underlying condition so it is hard to say where it comes from. There may well be a genetic component

This really isn't a question about driving, is it?
This is an anxiety/mental health/parenting question. Perhaps one far better suited to Mumsnet?1
