Travel insurance costs

I'm aged 92 and, not surprisingly, have various medical conditions (high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, etc). Take lots of pills, have never needed hospital admission, can walk fine.

Insureandgo have quoted me £450 for a one week single trip to France, and £1700 for an annual policy for Europe.

I'm wondering if these are sensible prices or if I should look further. When I looked last year InsureandGo seemed good value. I think that single trip makes most sense, as I could take this trip and even another two weeks elsewhere for less than the annual cost.

Given my age and general health I'm not expecting low prices, but I have no diseases or injuries, just the sort of thing for which preventive medication is recommended.

Shop around. Try Avanti amongst others. Seems steep to me.

Thanks. I hadn't heard of Avanti, but they seem a good price if they are a decent firm. But they seem to have bad reviews from those who have attempted to claim from them.

Actually Saga are reasonably cheap and are a Which Best Buy.

I think the reason I looked particularly at Insureandgo is that they offer annual policies, but I think Saga only offers single-trip policies for people my age. But anyway it does look as though single-trip makes most sense for me, the days when annual policies were best are past now.

I am 67 with paroxysmal afib and only taking two drugs.

I shopped around all of the companies mentioned so far and eventually bought my policy from SAGA.

They were by far the cheapest and an annual policy with 90 day trip extensions allowing a total of 180 days insured in a year was actually cheaper than their own single trip policy for the 88 day trip to Thailand I am currently enjoying.

Try the comparison sites as prices and levels of cover vary massively.

Have you considered a packaged bank account ?

The Nationwide FlexPlus travel insurance cover is with Aviva - they no longer have an upper age limit restriction, policy quotes are now based on pre-existing medical conditions.

The account annual mainteance fee is £18 per month, single or joint - then Aviva add on premiums based on medical issues.

I pay an additional £30 for hypertension.

You can call Aviva direct on 0800 051 2532 to get an idea of costs before applying to Nationwide for the account.

Might work out a better deal than that already quoted ?

No upper age limit and cover for pre-existing conditions make this worth looking at - many packaged accounts don't include either of these.

I checked the extra cost, which is quite high. But since it gives an annual policy at a total (additional fee and standard FlexPlus charges) only £100 more than Saga's single trip, it seems worth taking

I am considerably younger than you, but with many medical conditions to declare. I struggled to get travel insurance at all, as almost all companies declined to quote. I eventually found two insurers that would cover me, Insure&Go and AllClear. I opted for AllClear, who say they cover all ages and all medical conditions, so may be worth trying.

Worth checking the Nationwide Flexplus bank account, as suggested to me above, as you can add medical cover and - the most important factor - check the cost for this before opening an account.
