Bank account details request from HMRC

People have posted on here before, or maybe the Savings board, that when HMRC provide (by post) details of the interest they have received it is listed account by account and I think some have mentioned it showing the account number and sort code.
It is likely just so they make sure they are updating things correctly. What is pointless these days (outside of Self Assessment) is saying my interest for 2025/26 was £X. They need/expect more detail than that.

They can, but they only do it as a last resort so unless you have debts owed to HMRC and you are intending to ignore every attempt they make to recover the money from you with your permission then I think your concerns are entirely unreasonable.
By the way, unless you only opened the relevant accounts in the 2025/6 tax year they will already have all the details from bank submissions in previous years.

If SA does not need bank details and presumably that is adequate, why then does anyone have to provide them?

..but they can do it, and that is a concern - for me at least. Who knows how it may develop in the future?

They don't need account details to do it though, they have other means.

Instead of ridiculous conspiracy theories and assuming you want the refund due then just do as asked, you are only delaying your own tax rebate. The alternative is you wait on the banks notifying HMRC of your interest which takes time.
If HMRC really wanted your bank account details, trust me, they will get them through other means.

This may not help but when I have called HMRC about interest figures in the past they have given the last three digits of the account number. Maybe you could try that - so give them account number "ending 123"?

That's my point. I'm therefore not convinced I should have to provide them, and I'm not convinced it is in my best interests to do so - maybe not now, but perhaps for the future. To me, such information is for me to know and few others. I fully understand HMRC could find alternative ways, but why give them ammunition? I appreciate that not doing so could delay any rebate but again, I don't fully appreciate why bank details could delay matters - amounts should suffice.
The thing that irks is this continual intrusion into folks' personal and private affairs. HMRC have all information necessary to calculate any rebate/tax in a timely manner. The increasing need to know stuff is not necessarily a good thing and is open to massive abuse. Hence my reluctance to yield to it.

But you would know about an outstanding debt and have refused to pay it.
Since the banks notify of the details each year HMRC do not need your completed form to know the account numbers and sort code. So, not completing the form does not achieve what you think it does.
It just delays any revision of your tax position.
My 24/25 reconciliation was done at the end of January this year.

There appeared to be some folk on here who believed HMRC could not pilfer your account. They can.
If HMRC don't need my bank details why do they ask for them, and why does it delay matters?
