Bank account details request from HMRC

The Inland Revenue have been
stealing your moneycollecting taxes due for over 150 years, think they've probably worked out how bank and building societies work by now.0 -
You still havent explained how you think they would use a sort code and account number to "pilfer" you, your fears are based on either misinformation or a lack of education. Or both.

My fears are based on not knowing. Why then take the risk if you don't know?

Ah so the lack of education then.
I already explained on the last page. But if you have read this and decided it is incorrect, so be it.

I admire your faith but don't share it. If you can prove beyond all reasonable doubt that it will never happen then fine. I cannot prove it, so I'd rather not take the risk.

I've already proven beyond all reasonable doubt in my post in the last page, if you dont understand how the banking system works in this country thats fine.

HMRC almost certainly just want that information so they can update their records with your actual interest details for 2025/26.
Until they have those details they won't review the final position for that tax year and you therefore won't be getting the benefit of any higher rate relief on your pension contributions, assuming that is best you mean by higher rate pension rebate.
So unless they have served you with some formal notice to provide that information you you can safely ignore it. But also stop expecting your refund to arrive.

Yes - Understood. What I was concerned about was them requesting the account details. I have no issue providing them with the amount - which I would have thought was adequate for calculation purposes. However, I think you are right in so far as by not doing as they ask by also giving them account details, then any refund will not be forthcoming.

I've never had such a letter from HMRC but I suspect it is due to your previous correspondence with them, and perhaps they are trying to resolve your situation more quickly than would be the case if they simply waited for the banks to submit interest figures later in the year. If you don't provide the information it will get to them eventually (including sortcodes and account numbers!) but it could be 2027 before they finalise your account based on timescales from the last couple of years.
I should also point out that in terms of pilfering your accounts one of the methods suggested, setting up a direct debit, is rarely possible on savings accounts (many of mine only allow a withdrawal to a nominated account) so that should rule out that method in most cases.

My understanding is that they can raid your account via a DRD notice. For sure only after certain conditions, but they can do it without your permission.
