Time to deliver
I ordered something online, rough cost around 150 pounds using a credit card. I got an acknowledgement email but that was followed by another email stating that because they were a shop and relied on the manufacturers to supply the goods, there could be a delay of up to 16 weeks. This was not stated on the website when I ordered. This is unacceptable to wait for possibly four months when I know that using a major online supplier would provide me with my goods within a couple of days albeit for a slightly higher price. Do I cancel and demand a refund or give them a time ultimatum to deliver and if they refuse, what steps should I take. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.
You've answered your own question. The uncertainty from that supplier is unacceptable to you, so you cancel without delay and order instead from the supplier who can deliver within a timeframe which is acceptable.
Tell them clearly that you are exercising your right to cancel the contract under s32 of the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. This step is important.
The price and how you paid are irrelevant. Assuming you are indeed a consumer (the purchase is not for something connected with your job) and the product is a standard manufactured item, they must accept your cancellation and give you a full refund.

You're legally entitled to cancel for a full refund of the purchase price, assuming it isn't bespoke. They should have made it clear before you placed your order that it would take that length of time to supply the goods. I would do that right away, and make sure you inform them in writing.
There's no point trying to issue a time is of the essence type demand, as they have already said they don't have the goods and it's going to take them around 16 weeks to get them. You can't force them to do something that they can't do.
If they refuse to cancel and refund, this is against the CRA and there's a range of actions you can take. Number one would be if you paid via credit card or PayPal or any other kind of finance service, to contact your card/finance company and tell them that they're refusing to refund you for an order cancellation.
EDIT Of course I'm assuming you're purchasing from a UK company or from a country with similar consumer rights. If it's Amazon, you should easily be able to cancel your order anyway.

It would help if OP clarified exactly who they've bought from, as we don't know at this stage whether CRA and/or CCRs are relevant, e.g. if it's an overseas business…

"Which "major online supplier" is this?…"
I bet it's Amazon!

That wouldn't be a surprise - I belatedly realised that I'd misread OP's reference, thinking they'd bought from the 'major online supplier', whereas they were citing them as an alternative supplier to the one they actually used…

And then the question is it sold by Amazon or a third party seller or market place seller?

Sounds like OP has bought from a Drop Shipper in 1st instance.
Without a link to the website, they may have it covered in the delivery timescales.🤷♀️

Sorry for the late reply and thank you for taking the time. It is a shop in England. Small business I understand. There were no details of supply being possibly late and it was only the second email that they sent which mentioned it. The items I want are sporting goods and given that they said it could be fourteen to sixteen weeks, they season would be over by then. I paid with a credit card as stated so that I was covered as I understand? I am going to phone them and try to get an answer. Major supplier is Amazon but I was trying to support UK business. Sadly let down!

Possibly stuck on a boat coming from China.

Without being stated otherwise, goods must be delivered within 30 days, if they cannot meet that then you may treat the contract at an end for a full refund.
