Eco setting on your dishwasher and washing machine
In my new job as a water efficiency technician I am finding about 90% of all the home owners I visit have the Eco setting all wrong. They think that because it runs for a long time (3 to 4 hours depending on manufacturer) it will consume more water and electricity so they have engaged with the quick wash option.
I can 100% confirm that a quick wash will be using 5 to 10 litres of additional water and as it's using more water it will be using much more electricity to heat the water.
Wikipedia will validate this or any manufacturer that has Eco as a program option.
Cut your water and electricity bill buy engaging with your Eco settings

That doesn't necessarily apply this time of year if the property has solar panels that provide free electricity. We set our machines to run at around midday when the solar energy produced is usually at its max so, running a normal wash costs no more.

I do find that only using eco mode tends to make the dishwasher have an "aroma" after a few uses. To avoid this we do a non eco cycle once a week, but use the eco the rest of the time.
*I have and do check filters etc. so that's not the cause

I checked the dishwasher manual as it was handy and my quick wash (30 minutes) uses 0.88kW and 11 litres of water. The Eco wash (162 minutes) uses 0.95kW and 9 litres of water. Everything is spotless with Eco, but not so with quick wash. In money my quick wash costs 16p and the Eco 17p

On my Beko washing machine:
- 7kg 40C Eco wash: 44 litres of water, 0.965 kWh.
- 7kg 30C quick wash: 66 litres of water, 0.30 kWh
I use the Eco wash all the time.

Our Bosch dishwasher uses 0.543 kWh on Eco and 9.5 L of water. It takes four hours, fifty-five minutes on Eco. We run it during off-peak electricity rates.
Rarely do we have a problem with the quality of wash, but every now and then the dishwasher asks for a cleaning wash, which we do. That freshens it and removes any built-up grease.

so here in Scotland we generally don’t have water meters. So quick wash is the best solution by the sounds of things.

We've used eco mode with a quick wash setting for a while now with our Bosch dishwasher and it's only recently that I've come to appreciate that the quick wash setting may actually be less efficient. Definitely, is counter-intuitive - well, at least it was for us!
