The green WAN and HAN lights on the comms hub flash together every 4 or 5 seconds.

This indicates that the comms hub has a connection on the WAN and an active HAN.

On the HAN, do you have a working in-home display (IHD)? If you do, can see both electric and gas info on it?

(If you don't want to investigate, that's fine; just say so and I'll stop asking questions!)

No I don't have an IHD. Had no need of one. I don't mind the questions - always curious about how things work (or don't work). I did find a video on reading this meter (Landis & Gyr E470) which did indicate that button A for cycling is known to be unreliable - no matter how long you press, or however many times it often does not progress the cycle. I was expecting more than 3 screens, but what do I know!! LOL!! Maybe I need to go and put more thumb pressure on the button. Sigh! Never had all this silliness in 50 years with the old mechanical meters. Progress eh????

OK. So I normally read the meter by shining a torch on it as it is high up above my work bench. Reading the old meter was much less hassle. My first attempt above was done using a stick to press button A. So now I have climbed up on the bench and persisted with my thumb and with several hesitations got it to cycle round date, time and all sorts of info that might as well be Chinese (nihao!). Deffo no "Welcome to EDF". All I can be sure of is that it is reading my usage correctly as I still use the same per day/week/month as I have always done, give or take the seasonal variances in usage.

It is a Type 5533 meter if that means anything to anyone.

Normal service is restored. Submitted readings this morning and just received the bill - which is accurate to the penny, agreeing with my own calculations. Have to say it was all dealt with politely & efficiently by 2 CS people, keeping me in the loop every few days.
