Anglian water seasonal tarriff

Has anyone else been placed on this, quite frankly ridiculous, seasonal tariff? The one where we are charged super high rates in the summer months.

I'm worried that I won't be able to pay my water bill going forward and Anglian Water are next to useless. My rate per cubic meter will increase to £4.8620 but what really angers me, is I have proof that someone who is on the same tariff has been told their rate will be £4.3880.

I'm unsure why there is such a difference in prices and what I can do to dispute this tariff. I'm going round in circles with Anglian Water who gave me the number for Ofwat but that sends you to a messaging service which will only respond if you've complained and had no response elsewhere.

There are two different tariffs, with different costs, one is £4.3880/£2.2095 May-Aug/Rest and the other is £4.8620/£1.9634 https://www.anglianwater.co.uk/hidden-pages/seasonal-tariff-trial The higher rate Is May, June, July and August, the eight months of the year are below the standard rate of £2.9538. The theory is someone with consistent water usage throughout the year will end up with the same net cost, however those with higher summer usage will pay more, designed to reflect the additional cost of supplying that water in the summer period.

There is nothing you can do to "dispute" this tariff, within the criteria the properties were randomly selected within their various groups, you cannot opt in, nor can you opt out and the scheme is fully Ofwat approved.

  • Oh but I will dispute it! I know all of the above. But honestly, it's lip service. My bill has increased since being on this tariff so.its also nonsense.

I'm happy to pay for my usage but not at a cost that is quite frankly extortionate and discriminatory.

There is nothing to dispute. You can complain/whine, but that will just be a waste of everyone's time, including your own. This is not extortionate, the summer rate is set at roughly the cost of providing water in the summer, the increased cost of usage. It is not discriminatory.

Everyone's bills have increased since these schemes were increased in 2024, in most areas by more than 30% since 2024, in some or for low users more than a 50% increase. I think you may be conflating that increase with impact of this tariff change.

If you have your 4/8 month usage data you could calculate what the impact has been, but unless you use a lot of extra water in summer, filling swimming pools, watering lawns etc. then you are unlikely to have any significant net change.

My bill has increased since being on this tariff so.its also nonsense.

If your bill has increased already, during the cheaper period, it seems likely you would have paid even more on the flat rate tariff.

Wanted charges in general have gone up this year.

  • I'll happily waste their time. My bill went up last summer when this tariff was in its first year. I'm aware of the absolute nonsense they spout about it being roughly the same but my bills say otherwise.

Everyone's bills went up last summer, that is the overall price rises.

If you provide your usage figures for the relevant period we can either validate or disproven your assumption.
