Fear not, Mrs QrizB has a 9 o'clock-ish appointment at the London office!

I did a same day (4 hour turnaround) appointment in London last summer. It is an incredibly efficient service that is very tightly managed. While they were printing I wandered along the Thames, took the cable car over to the river, drank too much coffee then came back and picked up the new passport. From memory I don't think +1 are allowed in but there's a few places nearby you can wait.

Where is the emergency passport appointment location now?

When I last used it about 30 years ago it was in Petty France.

Yes I was simplifying as the OP's case is just an out and back not multiple countries. My understanding was emergency travel papers is issued by UK embassies when you're abroad (granted could be whether you're travellling back home or onward) and not when you're still in the UK. That seems to cover your example too.

Hence the last comment, that you cannot get emergency travel documents whilst in the UK, instead you have the 2 day process of an 1 day passport request which may or may not be 2 days depending on availability of appointments.

In this era of electronic data collection and communications etc. - is it beyond the resources of the Passport Office to issue a warning message that a passport is due to expire with a 3 months (for example) heads up ?

Similar to DVLA on driving licences and road tax.

Or our GP surgery and dentist who send out appointment reminders by text several times.
