Why do different ISP's list different potential fibre capability?

    That makes sense

"Is this fibre to the home (FTTH) or fibre to the cabinet (FTTC)?"

    No idea

"Because Openreach are insisting that new customers must have FTTH in areas where it's available, many ISPs are doing a cheaper tier where the speed is capped to match the old FTTC speeds".

That is interesting, so are they doing that to any premises, whether a flat or house or tower block?

Thanks, I think you are right, I just wonder whether when you buy 36mb that it may be some configuration which makes the performance slower. So the line is really 73mb or 80mb as others have said, but they have some sort of virtual config that caps it.

You are right, I am on mobile currently and get about 5mb on a good day, so 36mb should feel fantastic, but when I visit people with far higher speeds I don't get the whizz I feel in a commercial premises that has the same speed.

One day someone who works for these companies will spill the beans on what they do and why it makes a difference.

With different ISPs then it's the same as why all the supermarkets and Harrods food court dont all sell the same thing. All sell baked beans but each has different range of brands/qualities available

It's likely that they are all buying services from OpenReach but like most sellers OpenReach dont only sell a single product so different resellers will have different capabilities. Similarly ISPs arent legally obliged to offer a social tariff so some may decide they want their offering to be more limited max speeds

If you're shopping around, it will say what they are offering. FTTH is often called "full fibre". If they are offering speeds of 150mb or more, it's going to be FTTH.

Openreach want to remove the copper network and switch everyone to fibre. As part of that process, once they consider that a street is ready for fibre, they don't offer anything else. If you want to switch to a new ISP, it will be fibre only, even if you are currently on FTTC.

If you live in a flat or rented property, then you may need to get permission from the landlord for Openreach to drill a new hole for their fibre. That's your problem. Openreach just won't offer copper lines any more.

    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

LL is Housing Association, they really do not care, I have called them to ask before when fibre first came on the scene and someone said the same thing, they just said they did not get involved and it was up to BT Openreach to install what they could. I then followed up with the neighbourhood manager and they confirmed same.
