So we do wonder about that stairs carpet if we can find some remnants cheap

It will still need fitting- not really a DIY job unless you have some experience.

b A freshly painted hall and stairway will look good so perhaps investing in a runner style stair carpet will add to this and reduce the number of low offers you receive.

Somebodies already mentionned that a lot can be done for the hit you are already taking

    I would remove it

Especially if it's an old ugly carpet as well as threadbare. But I wouldn't replace it

If you can find a local carpet place that has off cuts, it could be surprisingly cheap. We had our stairs, landing and second stairs done in our old house for £250 a few months before we sold. Just ticked another job off for any potential buyers. Ours wasn't so much a fixer upper.

I'm going to disagree with what most people have said. Putting in a new carpet isn't going to cost a huge amount, and first impressions are everything, so may make the difference to a buyer. I recently viewed a flat which had a very tatty communal door and it immediately put me off even though the inside of the flat was very well presented. A quick paint job would have made the difference.

Bigger expenditure like refitting the kitchen and bathroom is definitely not worth it, but doing something with the carpet (pulling it up / replacing it for a few hundred £) might be an investment worth making.

I have to disagree. As the OP says the whole house needs work so a new carpet is not going to make a scrap of difference, and in fact if I saw that something new had been done in isolation I would wonder what it was hiding. In your case it was one thing and the rest was fine, that is not so in this case

I disagree and agree. The issue is we don't have a picture of said hallway or potential condition of the house and depending on that would sway the answer to yes or no for a quick £250-350 carpet fix for the hall.

Otherwise you are all just agreeing and disagreeing with whatever your mind has conjured up for what this house, hall and carpet on the stairs looks like and that won't be the same for all of us.

I think about for whom the OP is marketing.

There will be people who aspire to live in that house, but don't have the funds or the inclination to do the upgrading. We can forget them, though they'll probably be the greatest % of viewers.

That leaves clued-up people with the funds and/or the skills to take on a refurb, and builders/developers.

The latter won't care about the carpet or first impressions. They'll be looking at potential.
