Perhaps I was underestimating the cost of a new pump, so I checked on google. There seems to be a wide range of prices, but you can get a Grundfos one at Screwfix for £140 .
So engineer is coming back anyway to fit the capacitor. Replacing a heating pump is normally not a big job, so probably not much extra labour cost.
Alternative scenario- old pump breaks down in the middle of Winter. Emergency call out to fit new pump - £200 ?

I'm yanking yer chain.
Yes, if it's standard fit pump, then they are pretty affordable, and dead simple to replace - assuming gate valves are fitted.
But, kudos to a plumber who'll be willing to swap just a cap.

It's a big and expensive Wilo pump. The head unit is min of £700 + VAT. [corrected price]

With an (minimum) 80kW boiler, and possibly 32mm (or larger) feed/return, I would be expecting an industrial size pump. Not cheap !

Wilo S50/4 - Best part of a grand for a new pump 😮
And a 2" nominal bore pipe - That is a lot bigger than I thought it would be.
