I agree, the status benefits are nice, when they can actually be honoured in practice.
For example, we have a Melia status that is meant to mean jumping the queue at check-in. The reality is, either there is no queue so it makes no difference or there is one member of staff at Reception with a queue and I'm far too restrained to then just walk to the front of the queue for my "status" quick check-in so just queue anyhow. In any case, I have no way of knowing whether the people in front also have "status" eligibilty to jump the queue.
I am interested about the AMEX rewards as I just took out an AMEX card this week so anything gained will be a bonus I was not expecting.

Depends which AmEx you have, with some you gain access to their FHR and Hotel Collection which include things like free room upgrade or $100 of spa credit etc. You do have to double check rates though as sometimes it's much cheaper to book outside the scheme even factoring in the perks, other times it's a very good rate even before the perks.
