Hyatt Membership Perks ?

I’m a World of Hyatt Discoverist member and curious how consistent the perks really are across different locations. What upgrades, extras, or unexpected benefits have people actually received at different hotels? Would be good to hear real experiences rather than just what’s listed officially.

You will likely find more Hyatt customers knowledgeable in their rewards programme over at FlyersTalk.

Was an "explorist" for a while, can't remember anything off the specs and the specs are lower than a mid tier Hilton by comparison.

Did successfully use the guaranteed availability and was pleasantly surprised that their price wasn't eye gouging but then I never worked out what was going on during our visit that had caused all the hotels to be fully booked up.

A number of properties we did stay in however also had AmEx perks so its not 100% clear which benefits were coming from Hyatt and which were coming from AmEx

  • i think the explorist is better than discoverist but only marginal, i’m starting to think that the loyalty scheme is not worth it , maybe i should try marriott’s scheme instead

Mainly comes down to where you are going, what options you have if its business, and what you value.

Hilton has always been the best option for me and at gold you get free breakfast (normally full outside of the US despite being listed as continental) and access to the club room if one exists. When I used to drive up north after work we used to stop off at a Hilton on route, was typically under £50 for a room and status gave us free breakfast each (£26), free parking (£10) and 1-3 drinks each depending on how generous they were feeling (£12-£36). Certainly seemed good value to me! Wasnt the greatest hotel but it was about a bed to sleep in so didnt matter.

There are some better programmes but it's like VS -v- BA… I prefer Virgin but they rarely fly to where I am going.

  • Yeah fair point on Hilton’s value, I’ll definitely look into it. With Hyatt, we do get free breakfast on some stays with Discoverist, which adds a bit of extra value too.

I’m mainly thinking about international travel though, especially Asia like Indonesia and some parts of Europe, so trying to see which brand really holds up best in those regions.

With Asia travel in mind I would look at what chain hotels are actually in your desired locations.

I had a great time at the Hyatt in Bali and was well looked after. I also have status with Hilton and Marriott yet often struggle to find a suitable (to me) Hilton or Marriott in the locations I want to visit. It seems Accor and IHG have better chain coverage.

I find the IHG rewards programme the best of all the hotel groups for earning status / points and ability to easily redeem in beneficial ways.

The other group programme I find beneficial is Melia Rewards.

  • I do think the Hyatt deal in Bali is solid, especially after staying at the Hyatt Regency Bali, great value for money there.

Outside of that though, I haven’t really seen many standout deals. I’m not too familiar with IHG yet, and Marriott properties seem quite expensive in comparison.

Makes me question how worthwhile these loyalty schemes really are, but I’ll take a closer look at IHG and see.

From our travels last year, by the end of the year we earned enough IHG points that we had 3 nights away for free. Properly free hotel stay with breakfast and no charges. All we had to pay for were bar drinks and evening meals, but we had evening meal in the town anyhow.
