I have been accused of making a benefit fraud report to DWP/HMRC, as apparently the people were TOLD

is that possible?

I made no so report as I have no time nor care for that

However I just googled it and it said everything is anonymous anyway so I am wondering how it is possible that this happened in an interview, where the people being interviewed apparently got TOLD that it was me who done it?

Who told you that your name was mentioned?

Likely just a fishing expedition by the person who was reported to try and find out who it was.

it is totally anonymous and the person being accused would never be told who had accused them. The person interviewing them probably doesn't even know.
This is a fishing expedition and gossip of the person trying to find out who dobed them in.?

Absolutely agree with the comments above. Those being investigated immediately assume someone must have grassed them up whereas in reality there are many different ways a fraud or compliance investigation may begin.

I am going back many years - maybe nearly 20. A neighbour was distressed when the husband of a fellow neighbour told them that a police officer informed them of the location and telephone number of the person who made a complaint alleging that their children were being neglected.

Although it could not be proved it was very upsetting for the neighbour who had been confronted by the father of the children they had allegedly reported as being neglected. Until this happened the neighbour had quite a good relationship with this family. Within about a month or so all of the children were taken into care by Social Services.

People jump to a conclusion from who knew the information being investigated.
