The reason why Tempur are the big name in memory foam is because NASA developed memory foam for the astronauts seats for the apollo missions. Then tempur produced the memory foam for NASA. They then realised that it could be used for other products like mattresses. Then Tempur's patent expired, so many other companies also started to produce memory foam to just the same (if not higher) standard as Tempur, but at a much lower price.

The big manufacturers of memory foam for the UK market are Vitafoam and Kaymed. Both of these companies supply many of the british bed manufacturers. You may have heard of Kaymed as they also produce beds, but like Tempur they also charge very high prices compared to other beds that actually contain exactly the same memory foam.

What model is your Sealy, and what type of spring system does it have?

The best type of memory foam mattress for support is the pocket sprung/memory foam type.

Are you sure it is pocket sprung and not Posturepaedic. It should say on the label?

Belive me it's a step backwards to a reflex/memory foam mattress. They are also far hotter.

I can't actually say because it would be seen as advertising. However just go for a two sided mattress as they will last longer than non turn

Can't understand the step backwards thing, The Sealy didn't cost anything like a Tempur, it was less than 1k

Don't mind the hot thing, I'm a cold creature:rotfl: But some/many of them do have special covers now to aid with this don't they?

The only reason Tempur charge so much is because they are still clinging onto the past from when they were the only people who made memory foam. They also have the power of advertising just like Silentnight who many people actually believe make good mattresses because they are well known. If Tempur had suddenly reduced their prices when their patent ran out, they would have been taken to court by 1000's of previous customers because they were ripped off.

Even Sealy are over priced because they have a well known name. Don't get ripped off by going for a big brand name.

You would't expect a cheap reflex foam mattress to give you as good support as a pocket sprung one would you? So why would a reflex/memory foam mattress be as good as a pocket sprung/memory foam one?

There is a coolmax fabric, but it is a bit of a gimmick, and doesn't work as well as many retailers would make out.

The layer uder the memory foam is just as important as the memory foam as far as support goes.

I have posted the following advice many times in these forums, so please follow these guidelines in order to not make the mistake that viddy did:

I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds and mattresses from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:

1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller. Also read all their negative or neutral feedback.

3) make sure they have recent feedback (unused accounts with good feedback are sometimes hacked).

4) make sure most of their feedback is for selling, and that it is for similar items to those you want to purchase

5) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the right choice because it will cost them if you return it).

6) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.

7) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).

Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

Thanks Tim for the Reply, i should have read the forums before buying a mattress, will try and buy my next one from someone who has a good return policy. I paid less than £200/- inc postage and I guess you need to spend a bit more for a good memory foam. I turn a lot in my sleep and I find it difficult to turn on a memory foam as you sink into the mattress.

That's because the memory foam is too deep, and is probably too high density to suit you (the foam has a very slow recovery rate, so it leaves an imprint for too long).

i wasn;t sure to post a reply or not but we also bought a highland memory foam mattress and we both love it. We needed a firm mattress and this one just does the trick. It's very difficult to find a firm mattress as all retailers and online shops sell soft and medium ones. We asked the seller a question and they replied very quick confirming it's a firm mattress. Tim is making very negative comments about Tempur and other mattresses so unless you know what you want how can you jugde ? A Tempur mattress can cost you up to £2000 and guess what - it ranked bottom - so what are we judging here ? I suffered from backache and my GP told me to get a firm mattress - which i did and now i wake up with no pain. If you buy online or ebay you should read all feedback carefully and you will come across that 1000 of customers reported to have no backache anymore or other issues, but if you are looking for a soft or medium mattress buy a tempur one that cost you £1000+.

When people say you should get a firm mattress for back problems this usually refers to open coil sprung mattresses. This is because a soft open coil sprung mattress will bow down in the middle and can curve your spine. However with pocket sprung or memory foam you can go for what you find comfortable. This is due to the fact that both pocket springs and memory foam both contour to your body and give even support.

I don't know where you have been shopping, but you can't usually get a good supportive soft memory foam mattress. The softest you can usually get is medium. This is because the memory foam needs to be high density to give you the support it is supposed to. If it is a reflex/memory foam mattress, and they try to soften it by using softer reflex foam under the memory foam then this again can curve your sprine.

If you want a soft supportive mattress then you are better off going for pocket sprung only.

Google search brought up this thread, i was thinking of buying the Highland 10" Density 75KG/m3 Double Mattress for around 159.00 delivered on ebay, Highland are selling the item on amazon for same price +delivery. :think:


Any thoughts, advice, suggestions pse, Ive also got a chance of a Tempur 8", Density 95KG/m3 for 250.00 :think:
