I wanna Double Mattress or Divan Set for £150...

We have been needing a new double divan or just mattress for sometime, but just don't have the money. But today my parents have given me £150 for a new mattress.... please don't laugh, we understand we're not going to get a lot for that sort of money, but we have to make do the best we can.
We have seen a memory foam mattress on ebay for our budget - A Highland Luxury 10" double size memory foam mattress 75kg/m3 (haven't posted link as don't know if that's allowed) only it doesn't tick all your boxes on Tim's ebay advice i.e return policy, tel #, own transport - thus it's made us wary.
Can anyone please give us some advice?.... Tim????
We are very desperate to get something as have started to suffer with bad backs in the mornings, which lasts throughout the day now, and we're geting ratty with each other through lack of sleep...... please help us... someone???
Many Thanks
Trev, Kim

Hi well we have recently bought a new mattress from Ebay..a memory foam one it's king size and 8" so 20cm in height..think that's right!! Anyway for a kingsize it cost £155(rrp £400) with delivery so you may get a double for a similar price but thicker of you wish?
I was expecting it friday but it never showed, i got a very apologetic call from the shop saying due to new year they had been swamped, they have 100% feedback and he is willing to pay any delivery if we happen to miss it tommorow, it has a 5 yr guarantee as well.
if you want the link i will PM you ..let me know..i'll let you know what it's like tommorow!0 -

Sorry I didn't reply in time to save you money.
I have seen the Highland mattresses you refer to on ebay, and to be honest I do have my doubts as to how they can sell a mattress to the spec stated for the asking prices. However the reason could be quite legitimate, but in my experience it would most likely be one of the following reasons:
1) It is the manufacturer who are selling the mattresses, so they can sell at very low prices.
2) They are cheap low quality Chinese imports.
3) They are Bankrupt stock.
4) They are seconds.
5) They aren't actually what they claim to be.
I'd like to point out that i'm not making any suggestions that the seller isn't legitimate, but I do suggest that you ask the seller more questions before purchasing.0 -
I did buy the highland mattress, and I must say I am not pleased with it, Both me and my wife find it uncomfortable and I am having a backache. I prefer the traditional mattress I bought for my guest bed from argos. I am thinking of replacing the highland with a traditional mattress. Its amazing that a lot of people who have bought the same item on ebay find it very comfortable. Many users on ebay leave a feedback as soon as they recieve the item before evaluating it, and so a good feedback score does not always mean a good product.0

If it is the same model Highland mattress that I have been looking at the spec for, then I can see why it would be uncomfortable. It describes the mattress as having a soft feel. Well for a mattress with 75kg per m3 memory foam to have a soft feel then the reflex foam underneath must be very low density. The support this would provide would be very poor.
The layer uder the memory foam is just as important as the memory foam as far as support goes.
It actually states on the listings "the higher the density the better the mattress", well this shows how little the manufacturers actually know about the product they make.
I also see that their return policy states that the mattress must be unopened and unused in order to return it. So you can't even try it out, so you have lost your money.
I have posted the following advice many times in these forums, so please follow these guidelines in order to not make the mistake that viddy did:
I know that many people are very wary about buying items like beds and mattresses from ebay. However if you follow a few guidelines then you can save up to 75% on the shop prices:
1) most important of all make sure that the seller gives a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
2) check previous feedback for the seller, and even contact previous customers to ask them about the seller. Also read all their negative or neutral feedback.
3) make sure they have recent feedback (unused accounts with good feedback are sometimes hacked).
4) make sure most of their feedback is for selling, and that it is for similar items to those you want to purchase
5) use a company who display their phone number, so that you can talk to someone about your requirements (they want you to make the right choice because it will cost them if you return it).
6) check the sellers return policy. Many sellers charge for postage on returns.....can work out very expensive if you have unpacked a vacuum packed mattress, and you don't like it.
7) try to use a seller who delivers using their own transport. Couriers often damage or misplace goods (believe me I know from experience).
Obviously you can't try before you buy, but for the saving it is worth the risk if you follow the guidelines above.

Sorry to hijack thread, can I ask TIM DEEGAN a question:D
I know you say Tempur are over priced, but if I were to get one is there any difference in what one I should pick for a persons weight?
My DH is a big guy, hes about 18 stone. So if I was going for a Tempur are their rules as to what one I should get? I like the look of the celebrity one, looks a bit soft & cosy:D
Instead of a Tempur base, I'm thinking of just a plain platform top divan. M&S do a 6 wide one for £300 or £400. I did read another website that did extra-strong bases, what do you think of that?
I've always had sprung bases before, I've always though platform top seems cheap & hollow & weak. Any recommendations?0 -
Here it is
http://www.tempurstores.co.uk/celebrity.html
I do want a memory foam. I have a sealy memory foam topped, sprung matteress, sprung divan.
I don't know where to get a good quality divan base for £150. The site I saw that did the extra strong one, charged an extra £150, not £20.
The reason I keep looking at Tempur, is because I don't want to get a cheap copy & always be sorry I hadn't splashed out for the "proper" one. Then I might even feel I had to buy the Tempur one & the money on the cheap one is just money wasted :-(
You would have wasted your money if you do buy a Tempur one. Did you know that they came out bottom in the Which magazine report?
The reason why Tempur are the big name in memory foam is because NASA developed memory foam for the astronauts seats for the apollo missions. Then tempur produced the memory foam for NASA. They then realised that it could be used for other products like mattresses. Then Tempur's patent expired, so many other companies also started to produce memory foam to just the same (if not higher) standard as Tempur, but at a much lower price.
The big manufacturers of memory foam for the UK market are Vitafoam and Kaymed. Both of these companies supply many of the british bed manufacturers. You may have heard of Kaymed as they also produce beds, but like Tempur they also charge very high prices compared to other beds that actually contain exactly the same memory foam.
What model is your Sealy, and what type of spring system does it have?
The best type of memory foam mattress for support is the pocket sprung/memory foam type.0 -
I don't have a clue what model it is.
Its cream with gold oval badges on the side.
Its pocket sprung. Pillow topped memory foam.
But I want a full foam type memory foam mattress next time.0
