Cheap-rate electricity sounds great in theory, but how do people actually remember?

Not really, it has not changed yet.
I suspect that system will end up being abandoned as unworkable and open to fraud and they will just decide to jack up VED.

… and we've all been expecting something to change as nobody expected the tax revenues would simply be allowed to fall without some reaction, so it isn't even a surprise.

Anyone with an EV who didn't realise a pay-per-mile scheme would be introduced in lieu of fuel tax must have had their head buried in the sand IMO.
Can you point us to where even one EV diver said that such a policy was a conspiracy theory?

I think everybody knew some alternative was coming.
Only ones that seem to be saying it was a conspiracy theory are those without EVs with a completely unreasonable bias against them.

Due to the weight of EV's in general I expect some sort of weight based tax due to the potential increased damage they do to the roads.
That's a far easier workable solution.
It would also focus the mind on not getting the biggest tank available lol

Hit Range Rovers where it hurts! They're heavier than nearly all EVs. Make it retrospective
Firm but fair, me.

Absolutely it's an all car weight tax not just EV if that was not made clear.

Range Rover owners already pay more via the "luxury car tax".

So do most EV drivers, or Indeed drivers of any new car, because the value ascribed to a "luxury" car is ridiculously low.

I think they've just up'd the threshold to £50k which TBH isn't all that much when you look at the recommended OTR of some cars nowadays.
It would be nice if they removed some of the bling, lights bells and whistles from the recommended prices and made them after-market add-ons to keep them below the "expensive" car tax threshold.
I couldn't ever fathom out the thinking of pricing a car only 1-2k over the threshold level when they could have easily left off a feature and made it come in a hundred or so below, saving 5 years worth of extra tax, which you still have to pay until its six years old. Even if you buy the car second-hand.
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers2
