"The best method for me to avoid any charge…" is what they suggested, set a zero spend cap unless you really need the capability. It also stops any potential scam texts where you're suddenly paying £15 a month or whatever.

Personally I'd never attempt to send a text to a landline as it can be extremely annoying to the recipient. My mother used to try to text my landline instead of my mobile, and the landline will ring every five minutes or so until answered and an electronic voice then attempts to read out the unintelligible mash of letters that she'd entered!

FWIW this isn't something I would usually do. I had just been informed that my mother had died and a friend was trying to call me while I was still at the nursing home. I diverted the call to my voicemail and quickly sent a text, not realising that they had called from their home phone.

Most of my frustration was the Tesco reps continually repeating that it was a premium rate text and not even attempting to provide an explanation of why their system had decided it was chargeable. Now it has been explained, it does at least make sense.

I am quite happy with the £2.50 spending cap I have, while having a zero cap does have its advantages it could also be restrictive if I did need to send something that was chargeable.
