There's a known problem with half-hour metering on certain SMETS1 E470s where they "double report" and you end up charged for twice as much electricity as you've actually used.

So if @EnergyTired can get hold of their old half-hourly readings and they have a standard 7 kW EV charger then whilst the car is charging you would see the usage as 3.5 kWh plus the background load each half hour. But if the meter was double reporting then the usage reported each half hour of car charging would be greater than 7 kWh. Is that right @QrizB?

how do i know if its SMETS 1 or 2?

If you share the exact model number (four digits, often begins with a 5, probably towared the top left of the meter) we can look it up.

Or you can share a photo of your meter and we can do it that way.

then whilst the car is charging you would see the usage as 3.5 kWh plus the background load each half hour. But if the meter was double reporting then the usage reported each half hour of car charging would be greater than 7 kWh.

    Exactly that, yes.

Its SMETS2, does that mean this can't be the issue then. I had high hope then :-(

I've now got hold of half hourly readings from Glowhome. They do match what EON have said, but what I don't understand is if I sum them then they come to 10k more than the final reading I gave to EON. But I only gave 1 reading, I was on a Drive tariff, so maybe I need to add on the low rate reading too, and that would make up the other 10k. This would all mean I'm genuinely using £4-6k of energy per year in a 3 bed solar panelled property :-(

If your meter has two non-zero import registers, yes your energy use over a given period is equal to the total increase in both registers.

Do you have records of readings for both registers?

(UK smart meters typically have four import registers but only one or two of those are generally used, the others remain zero )

That's certainly possible, although it would definitely be unusual.

    Is your property all-electric?

Can you share your meter reading history with us?

Does your current supplier provide an hourly/daily/weekly breakdown of your energy use, via their website or app?

When you leave a supplier, the correct protocol is to give a starting reading to your new supplier. Your new supplier then passes that reading on to your old supplier. Sometimes the reading might get adjusted slightly but the end result is that both your old and new suppliers use the same reading so there isn't a gap or an overlap and you don't get undercharged or overcharged. But your new supplier may have just read your meter remotely so you didn't need to tell them anything.

What is the start reading with your new supplier shown on your bill? Is it 10k more than the reading you took yourself?
