"I wouldn't worry about rudeness, Ryanair absolutely thrive on it, especially their social media team! And after all, you've paid for both flights and know that they're happy to keep all the money for both unless they cancel…"

Absolutely this, 100% - also, I'm thinking that if you check in and do a no show on the day then Ryanair can't resell the seats - which might have been possible had they had enough notice of cancellation.

It surprises me that O'Leary doesn't offer any incentive for folks to cancel, e.g. voucher for 50% of the original cost, which would enable them to resell the seats and entice you to book something else adding to the voucher value before its expiry. Plus physical passengers might buy things on board which no-shows obviously won't.

Perhaps worth noting that all airlines routinely overbook anyway, so they factor in an expected number of no-shows in their modelling and planning.

No, it was more like loud thinking. If OP lives close to the airport and the flight is extremely delayed - they can always show up at the airport. In this case it'd be better to be checked in than not. Extreme case though.
