How do I get the section on Trusts to show up on my online tax return?

For my 2023/24 self assessment return I had some estate income (interest) which arose during the administration of a relatives estate. The estate submitted a tax return (and paid the tax) so as I did not want to file a paper return I disclosed the income as taxed interest. I did not tick the box to say I had received income from a trust/estate but disclosed (in the white space for any other information) the fact that the income was from an estate where a trust/estate return had been submitted (quoting the UTR and date submitted). This was accepted by HMRC without any further enquiries. I accept that if your estate income is substantial or from various sources that this may not be appropriate but worth considering.

It’s not substantial but there is interest and dividends to take into account. Tax was paid for the administration period but I’ll owe tax on the interest so probably better to do it correctly.

Thanks for suggestion for Abratax. Got a similar issue with wife's return this year with her having received some taxed paid interest from her mothers estate but, separately, she also has received significant encashment of International Investment Bonds and a lot of bank interest so there will be top slicing relief involved. Might give Abratax a spin and see if it calculates the tax correctly (I know what the tax due should be but would have to pay to use that software to actually submit and like you this year is a one off so would rather not pay)

EDIT: Having just registered and filled in the details for my wife's SA on Abratax I can report that it is calculating the tax correctly (or at least in line with what I was expecting), including taxed paid estate income, top slicing relief and pay back of the Winter Fuel Allowance (she has exceeded the £35,000 limit). Its a lot more simplistic than Absolute Topup Tax (absolutetax.co.uk) which is very comprehensive and gives much better options for adding individual items under a category eg rather than just one entry for bank interest you can enter each Bank and amount received if you want to have the detail saved), but it costs £30 for up to 5 returns per tax year. But for this year I think Abratax will do for us.

Thanks. I’d just been trying it out too and yes I had already worked out the tax due and as you’ve found it agrees.

Seems straightforward for my purposes as my tax return is fairly simple anyway. Missed the Gift Aid section first time around but went back and added it. My mistake rather than it not being obvious.

So just need to check it over and submit it but I’m happy with it so far. For me it’s a one off as HMRC’s offering is enough for my purposes. I will tell my son about it as he will have the same problem this time around.

Thanks to the two posters who have now road tested Abratax self assessment software and achieved favourable outcomes.

With more and more people being pushed into the direction of self assessment, highlighting third party software as a realistic alternative to filing online with HMRC should be helpful to others.

Now submitted and received usual email from HMRC to confirm receipt. The actual submission isn’t showing on my Gateway Account but I’m guessing it takes a few days to show up - anybody know? When I use the HMRC offering it shows immediately that I’ve submitted it but does take a few days to update with figures etc.

There will be some adjustments to payments on account for 2025/26 as tax owed is less than the POAs. I know that doesn’t appear until after few days later. No POA for 2026/27 which is good.

With respect to AbraTax I expect it will depends what they choose to charge once out of Beta testing and then how it compares with other paid software. I’ve nothing else to compare it with though.

As previously indicated I use GoSimpletax software.

When filing my annual return I get confirmation of acceptance and a filing reference number within minutes.

However it did take a few days for HMRC's systems to up date with the relevant numbers and agreement of the tax calculated on my SA302. However I did file mid January which would have been a very busy period for HMRC's back office administration.

As for cost of software, I now pay £35 per annum via a concession from my Which Consumer Association membership, but this is up from £20 a few years ago.

I imagine the cheaper providers will be around £20 currently, but not all support SA107.

I am a 40% tax payer, so the software cost I pay is fairly minimal in the scheme of things.

Just to update this. Tax return appeared on HMRC Gateway Account this morning so all fine. Payment on Account amended too.

Had to go back in to AbraTax and file an amendment as I discovered that the tax still owing was going to be coded out when I usually tick for it not to be. Tax code is complicated enough because of Scottish tax bands. Didn’t see that box first time around because it only said do you owe tax? How you would know that before the calculation was done seems odd. Saying Yes then gave me another box to choose coded out or not. I’ve done some feedback suggesting they say something like Do you want any underpaid tax to be coded out?

Are more and more people being pushed in the direction of self assessment? I thought that HMRC were trying to reduce the numbers and the published stats seem to show that it's decreasing slightly over the past few years:

    Self Assessment 2022 facts summary:

12.2 million Self Assessment returns due

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/more-than-102-million-filed-their-self-assessment-by-31-january

    Self Assessment 2026 facts summary:

    12,029,168 Self Assessment returns expected

I should have been more nuanced. I was looking at the cohort of pensioners that have been pushed into 40% tax annually. That group are certainly increasing annually, and less likely to have their tax liabilties dealt with by simple assessment.
