Followed the instructions to the letter and never mentioned anything about a power supply.

Quite often the instructions fail to mention this. The only way to tell is to take a look at the card and see if there is a power socket. Firewire devices need a bit of oomph!

As an example of this a mate of mine had a top end graphics card given to him as not working. Once he installed he noticed the power socket, attached a feed from the PSU and got a bloody good card for free.

    Worth a look.

Im not sure what the problem could be really. Is is possible that the fault lies with the 1394 device that you are trying to use? What device are you using, and what happens when you plug it in?

If you really think that something went wrong in installation, it may be an idea to uninstall, then reinstall.

I just had a thought. On my 1394 card, it has one internal connector, and 2 external. If you connect the internal, one of the externals will stop working. Its designed like this, but means that it would be easy to believe that its faulty if you use the wrong connection. Have you tried all the different connectors?

It could be the device you are trying to connect. My camcorder worked fine on an old PC but on my current one and the one prior to this the only way I can get it recognised is to connect it to the PC and power it on before switching on the PC. then the pC sees it as a new device and all is fine.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
