Removal of old line
Just a quick query please. I've got Openreach booked in for full fibre broadband to be installed. I'm currently on the basic broadband with phone line. I'm aware the phone line will no longer work. Does the engineer switch this off at the box in the street or will they need access to the socket inside. Just want to make the job as simple as possible on the day. Thanks

It will be disconnected at the cabinet in the street but the will not remove the actual cable.
The internal socket may be removed if they bring the fibre cable through your wall at the same location but you won't know until installation day exactly how the work will be done.

No one will go into the cabinet and disconnect anything …if you are staying with the same provider and upgrading to FTTP or even changing providers, the copper service is effectively stopped then eventually ceased this is not a physical thing , it’s a computer algorithm type of thing ….if you have underground service then nothing is touched , you may find the existing socket keeps dialtone ( but you can’t make a proper call ) and if you dial 17070 from this soft dialtone , it reports a phone number you don’t recognise, but eventually that number is removed and the line goes completely dead , but as you won’t have anything connected in the socket it doesn’t really matter .
If you have overhead service often they take down the old copper drop wire when they put up the new fibre one , this disconnects your copper pair sockets , if you then want to remove them completely that’s upto you .

I have recently has Sky full fibre installed.
Openreach connected a new overhead cable from the outside telegraph pole to the house just below the roof, then down the side of the house to a box. They did not do anything with the old cable.
The Sky engineer wanted to drill through the wall next to the new box, but he needed an electrical socket nearby on the inside. There is not one, so drilled a hole where the old phone socket was.
He replaced the old socket with the new one, and ran a cable from there to the Openreach box outside.
Openreach did not ask me where I wanted the socket, so it is on the opposite side of my front door to where the cable comes into the house. I have a cable that goes back up the wall from the Openreach box, over the top of my front door and then back down the wall on the opposite side.
The Sky engineer said he could not move the Openreach box to the other side of the door, so that there would be less cable to look at.
The Sky engineer cut the cable of the old telephone line, and I got up a ladder and cut it off at the top of my house.0 -
I changed from FTTC on Open Reach network to Open Reach FTTP.
Engineer removed the copper wire completely and had used it to pull the new fibre cable in through wall access under the floor where the old router had been.
I have one outside box and another one inside with new hub.
So I needed to be present. He did a very neat job.
Completely differently to my neighbour who signed up to to FTTP via an Alt. Network, very untidy outside, no outside box and no removal of OR copper wire.

Altnets won't touch Openreach hardware; it doesn't belong to them.

It really depends on how the fibre is getting to your home. I had fibre installed for the first time earlier this year from the existing telephone pole. Because the pole was on the other side of a main road the OR engineer decided it was easier to pull the fibre cable over using the existing copper line, therefore this was then cut and disconnected at the entry point. I also wanted the fibre coming in at a different location so I've now got a master socket that's no longer connected to anything, which I'll eventually get round to removing next time I decorate.

Yes that's true.
But two weeks later he complained to his BB Provider, Sky, about his poor unstable TV programs and Sky sent OR out to correct the Alts pole connection.
