Laptop can't pick up wireless from PC

It's been a few months since I've had the laptop in use. I've turned it on tonight to do some work, but, it can't connect online.

It comes up with 3 wireless network options (the top one being mine) and when I tell it to connect it comes up with the Network Key box - this has 8 digits on it, but I know my webkey is about 28!

I've tried getting a connection with the 8 dots already in the box = nowt!
I've tried getting a connection by typing in the 28 webkey numbers/letters = nowt!!

Anyone got any advice, please?

Sincerely
Frustrated!

Don't understand the thread title, what are you trying to connect the laptop to? A PC or router?

Are you definatly typing in the correct wep key?

Log on to your router via the PC that is connected and check what it is. Also goto advanced in wireless network settings and remove the connection from your prefered wireless networks so you are starting from a fresh.

Make sure your router is not filtering by MAC code as well as it could be blocking your laptop this way.

    OK, here's what I've done.

I've tried to set up a new network but ... it says that my wireless lan isn't connected (??)

So, I've taken a look at the laptop settings and in the network tab, it tells me the device name of the wireless LAN card, link speed etc and under "Connection Status" it says ... Disconnected
Could that mean that there is something wrong with the laptops wireless LAN card? If it's "disconnected" is there a way I can connect it?
Having said that - when I push the button on the front of the laptop it does still tell me "Wireless Lan enabled"

As for the webkey, yes, I've tried several times and double checked and even copied and pasted to ensure I've done that part right.

Interestingly, when I try to type the webkey (26 digits) into the wireless network properties panel (via Control Panel) it only accepts 23 digits and no more  and keeps defaulting back to an 8 dot key.

I can make all kinds of things *with* my computer; but I can't make head nor tail of the workings *of* a computer :o

The 8 character length ******** obfuscates a longer key, it is a red herring.

Suggest you connect up to the router with a wire, connect to the routers webpage, change the encryption type to wpa-psk/tkip, put in a new key between 8 and 63 characters, and then connect using that and make sure the pc is set to wpa-psk/tkip
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

The laptop is already set to wpa-psk/tkip (I've learned that much tonight :D )

I'll check the PC encryption type ... ok, just tried to find the PC info, but it's not in the same place as the laptop

Is the router set to wpa-psk/tkip? By PC I meant laptop, unless the pc is also wireless?

No sure how to check the router - checked the stats online, but couldn't see where it would state wpa-psk/tkip.

    No the PC isn't wireless.

  • login to the router with (on the address line of your browser,<url>) 192.168.1.1
Username: Administrator (note- if you have not changed it, I suggest you do now and write it down and store it)
Password:admin or Admin (note- as above really)
Look in the Wireless/security and poke around the settings looking for WEP/WPA etc and the passkey is displayed.

It's also worth noting that the ip settings are stored on the lappy and need renewing to the any new setting, so reboot
