login to the router with (on the address line of your browser,<url>) 192.168.1.1
Username: Administrator (note- if you have not changed it, I suggest you do now and write it down and store it)
Password:admin or Admin (note- as above really)
Look in the Wireless/security and poke around the settings looking for WEP/WPA etc and the passkey is displayed.

It's also worth noting that the ip settings are stored on the lappy and need renewing to the any new setting, so reboot

Thank you. I had already located the wep key and checked, double checked, triple checked.

When you say reboot - do you mean restart the lappie? Or something more technical? (I thought rebooting simply meant turning it off and then back on?) Where will I find the ip settings on the laptop?

As for changing the wep key, there is a warning that if I change it, I will lose all internet connections, so I don't feel at all confident doing that :(

Why are you advising the OP to use WEP and "NOT WPA"?

WEP should only be used as a last resort, as it is much less secure than WPA-PSK encryption.

Im only suggesting that wep is in use there and she is trying to use WPA in error, setting to the original use of wep would get her going, not all routers can use WPA

espresso - I thought the WEP was my wep key number/code?

On my laptop, it's definately wpa-psk .. that's as far as I know!

Which router are you using? Make/model number?

You should use WPA-PSK if you can as it is much more secure.

Just wondered if you are using the pc as the router as I have with mine in the past, you have to set the pc wireless to station mode and adapter enabled.

Maybe no help at all, but just something I thought of.

It's the one which came with my Orange Broadband (I bet that's no help at all, but that's as much as I know!). It's plugged into my main PC (ethernet) and the laptop used to pick up the signal (very well, actually!)

    Everything worked fine.

The laptop hasn't been used for 4 months and I tried to turn it on last night and ... no wireless connection!

Now, the only thing left I can think of is ... a few weeks ago, I completely lost my broadband. Phone Orange helpline, they told me to do this/do that - did it. Everything (on the PC) came back fine and dandy. No explanation as to why it had all stopped; but all I cared about was, it was now working!

As I say, last night was the first time I'd turned the laptop on in the meantime - need to do some work for a project that's due tomorrow (seems I've blown that then :o ).

I've typed in the correct wep key into the laptop but zilch, nada, nowt!

As I say, I really don't feel confident at changing the wep key digits/code.

The laptop is definately WPA/PSK, that much I do know!

Do I need to take it somewhere to pay for a set up or something?

As you have been told to do various thing by the Orange helpline, we don't really know how it is set-up now. If you go to this webage here and type livebox wpa into the find box, the first article ID: kb12331 explains the procedure.

Obviously you need to use the same encryption type on both the router and the laptop. There are lots of helpful articles on their support pages that you can use, rather than ringing their unhelpful line!

I did check out their website last night, but didn't understand about "livebox wpa" so I shall do that now, thank you :D
