Connecting flights with US Airlines.

If sold as connecting flights then this should preserve your UK/EU regulatory rights for the entire end-to-end journey from the UK to Costa Rica, although these wouldn't help in scenarios like long queues, just delays to, or cancellations of, the flights themselves.
You wouldn't have any UK/EU regulatory rights on the return journey so would be subject to the airline's own policies for that.
