Connecting flights with US Airlines.
Hello,
I am looking at booking flights from the UK to CR with connecting flights via the US.
I am aware there may be flight delays, long queues and cancellations and have added a few days to make allowances for this.
What I am unsure of is United airlines would definitely refund or reschedule our flights for free if cancellation is due to something they consider out of their control. I know we would be protected by UK/ EU flight protection regulations for the first leg but from US to CR and the return flights I am unsure.
The flights are basic economy and all booked on one booking with United Airlines. I have checked policies and tried contacting UA chat but it is a bot response and just states you MAY be entitled to refunds depending on circumstances. It is all vague and need definitive answers so wondered if anyone else may know?
Thank you.

Just as a aside, bear in mind flying that route there is no "airside" connection in the United States, you will have to enter the country and collect baggage and re-check it in.
So ensure you are eligible to enter the United States (will need an ESTA or a visa if not eligible for an ESTA)

Are you saying that you're spending a few days in the USA between arriving from the UK and departing for Costa Rica, or is the ticketing definitely sold as connecting flights?

Only for a stopover. Looking at flights with 4-6 hrs stopover time as I know queues may be long. The tickets are for the whole return trip with connecting flights with United Airlines.

I am thinking of adding a few days to make allowances for delayed flights/missed connections so it doesn't impact our time actually on holiday. So looking at 16/17 days so can definitely (hopefully) get 2 weeks on holiday.

The problem out of your control it you likely can only check bags in X hours before the flight anyway (I have no idea what X is btw)
