Theres a chance that your phone has been backing itself up to Google ( not sure if that function is on by default)
So you might have the option to restore from that back up on the new phone ?in a web browser …..
Go to drive.google.com.On the left-hand sidebar, click on Storage (it usually shows your storage usage).
In the top-right area of the page, click the Backups link (near the gear icon or just above the file list).
A list of all device and WhatsApp backups will appear.

most can be removed or disabled. Loads of videos on youtube showing how
Not really an issue on my Poco

Thanks everyone. Off to Argos to buy a phone as their website ordering seems to be broken. Aiming for the pixel 9a or the honor 400. Rather limited by what appears to be in stock as I need to get it set up before travelling home in a couple of days (train ticket on phone, not sure whether mum's printer will work for it!)

Thanks everyone for your help again. Ended up with the Google Pixel 9a. I moved the SIM across from the old phone.
My Google stuff (calendars, contacts, emails) has appeared on the phone. WhatsApp history was all there once I installed the app. I'd had to resort to Messenger via laptop for contacting some people while I had no mobile; those conversations haven't synced up to the Messenger app once installed on the phone, but I can live with that.
I have lost texts, the Notes in the notes app, and possibly the Sheets. But it could be worse.
NB. First Direct now allows you to have the app on up to 3 devices at once, so that anticipated issue didn't arise.

You miss the point, some makes eg Xiaomi and Motorola download apps you might like frequently. Not just when you buy the phone.
And Xiaomi has ads in the operating system.

In terms of getting stuff off the broken phone, if it's alive to some degree, although you can't use the screen, you could try connecting it to a computer via a cable and that MIGHT allow you to get access to the phone's contents in order to copy them
