Any tips to pass an MOT in Newport without issues?

I'm in the same position as you this year for the first time in 10 years.
I have moved and my trusted mechanic, & his local MOT centre are 175 milles away.
You have a 3 moves to make.
1, Local council testing station, Fair but strict.
2, Word of mouth from a friend or work colleague. ( This is my option ).
3, A no pass no fee garage, or one that does not do repairs. Look below
As above check the basics. Oil level as well.
I give my car a good 20 minute spanking the day before.
10 mins up the motorway at 70 in a lower gear so Im at 3000 rpm, & back again.
Clear out the cobwebs.

The one time I took a car to a council testing station, I swore blind never again.
It was made VERY apparent to me that they did not want or need my business, and only accepted the booking because they had to.
I then left with a long sheet of fails and advisories that were utterly overblown and trivial manufactured rubbish.
The car went to a local garage the next day, with no work done, and passed with a clean sheet.0 -
It's only dealers with MOT tester mates who get 'advisory free MOTs". The rest of us have to put up with all sorts of stuff.

As for garages in Newport, it's hard to say without knowing whether that's Newport Shropshire, two in Wales, Isle of Wight and quite a few more.
Aren't we safe to assume it's the one which is several times bigger than all the others put together?

Assume nothing, especially on the internet. The fact that the OP didn’t specify suggests he may not know there are many others.
NAFF OFF = Never Assume, Ffind Out Ffirst.

If you're in one of the other places also called Newport, you're more likely to know about specifying you're not talking about the big Welsh one.

You can take the car for the test, find out what needs doing, then take it away and fix those items, and then take it back.
Alternatively you can regularly service and maintain your car so the MOT is a mere formality.
I've used both of those approaches over the years.

On the passenger seat.
Our local police could be “bought” in a similar way until Police Scotland got wise and started rotating staff outwith the area.
