I agree ( though it will not apply to me) but I can forsee potentially objections and challenges and unpopularity ( those could be an issue for any government) as well as criticism of hindering progress to net zero which adds a little political pressure.

I doubt it would take lo g for government to side step them though, so on second thoughts maybe not a big problem in itself!

It's interesting that if a large scale hack of an energy company like British gas happened that those with dumb meters thought all the burglars would rush to the smart meter data on the dark web to burgle those people with smart meters.

The whole "but they can get your live data and know you're not at home" argument stems from a wish to terrify, and it's a reliable method of doing so because those attempting to cause harm can reliably assume that those they aim to scare won't have the first clue that the mechanics to do it are so far beyond the average criminals ability as to make it pretty much a non-concern. Those intent on doing the scaring can then sit back and watch their victims "spreading the (fake) word" for them, and once someone has been frightened to that degree, even if with completely false information, it's incredibly difficult to then persuade those people that actually the people they really need to be frightened of are those who are seeking to scare them in the first place!

I used to go in large meter cupboard s with over 60 electric meters in them with many of them very similar meter serial numbers . That 460 units is too big so it has to be a meter reader error . Our handhelds would clang back at me as out of tolerances asking me to double check meter serial number and reading if it was way out of tolerance .

Could also be a temp Agency reader who's had ten minutes training ( two weeks in practice ) who's earning minimum wage using his own vehicle .That's what they use now in the race to the bottom to get lowest possible price for basically an unskilled job checking meter readings .

BG have never read their own meters with their own staff and I started with them in 1998 .They .always used Agency s .So I reckon someone's cocked up because he/she was fed up of the the job .

So have you applied for one ..Or maybe try an Octopus smart tariff where I ve just had 12 hours free electric plus they paid me a fiver for using the electricity ..plus another four hours free today .
