Worcester Bosch combi replacement

I've an older (19 years at least) Worcester Bosch Greenstar CDi that needs replacing soon and I'm looking at suitable replacements. Should I replace it with a more modern WB Greenstar such as the 4000 or stick with another CDi. It does say something about the model that WB still manufacture them and I've always found them to be pretty rock solid, having lived in two properties with the CDi. The only downside would be that they're not that compatible with the more modern controls.

Also, this isn't a discussion about the benefits of, or whether I should be looking at ASHP, if that's going to be your advice then please comment elsewhere.

Im glad to hear you have had no issues. All boilers are as efficient as each other, so if it works then it works. I use smart rad controllers and boiler control and these can save money and are worth considering.

Get yourself over to Boxt.co.uk and get a price for a new boiler.

On there you can see what boiler options are on offer as well.

Already done that and this discussion isn't really about price. Just interested in people's opinions of whether to stick with the older tech and built like a tank workhorse of the Cdi Vs the more modern, and arguably more efficient 4000 range. Also, not wedded to WB, if there are better alternatives.

To say all boilers are "as efficient as each other" isn't actually that accurate.

i do not know if it is luck /make/model /how they are used with boilers and longevity

i currently have 5 boilers potterton/ worcester / etc etc

my tennants boilers oldest is a baxi duo tec combi 28 which was installed in 2014 so 12 years old and they all are serviced every year but nearly every year all have some minor fault

my newest was installed in november and was only 7 years since the old one was fitted brand new and perished due to internal condensation corroding everything .

yet my own boiler which is in a 11 room house / is in the back wall of my garage / is a 21 years old potterton as long as i have not put the knackers on it typing this is good as gold and have replaced a heating exchange as its only fault in 21 years and still going strong.

The Cdi is an efficient boiler ( not a combination but a condensing system boiler I'd I remember correctly. [EDIT As pointed out below I have that wrong and the Cdi certainly is a combi]

Probably no need to replace as WB do a good call out fix ( as posted on another thread) at a cost much less than a new boiler( in the hundreds not thousands ).

    Very MSE....

The Greenstar CDi is very much a combi boiler. I get what you're saying about the fixed price repair that WB offer (that was my post btw) but there's only so many times one can get the boiler fixed before it starts to become uneconomical and repairs only give it a temporary stay of execution. Like I said it's a good 19 years old and possibly a bit big for this house, it's a 37cdi in a 3 bed semi and I could do with something now that will last a similar amount of time before gas boilers stop being available.

37KW is pretty normal for a combi. Of course it is far too big just to heat a 3 bed semi, but if you want a decent amount of hot water on tap, then you need the higher power.

we changed our viessman boiler last year for another viessman, it didn’t have many issues over its 17 year life, so if your happy with your WB then stick with them..
