o need for a smart one.
Mine are mechanical with the option of auto- the time chosen for each day. of the week for period of ten weeks. So a different time for on and off day can be set for each day.-
or random , where you set the timers for each day, but the timer varies it at random.

BIL refused to call insurers and repaired the window fitting.
..
My concern is that having discovered the property is empty, the thieves may return and cause more damage which the insurers will then refuse to cover when they realise there has been more than one break in.
Is there any legal requirement to report to insurers? Any advice welcome
I expect there's no law requiring you to tell insurers, but there will be a contractual term in their T&Cs, so if you don't then the insurance is invalidated and they won't pay out. So in practical terms, if you want the insurance to be effective then you do have to tell them, if not then why not just cancel the policy and save the premiums?
Similarly you'll also need to telll them the property is unoccupied after a certain number of days - if not they may decline to cover not only future break ins but also other damages.

Not if you use a random timer. I have a light upstairs that comes on randomly throughout the night

He has gone up today but will programme them to come in randomly between 1800 and midnight
