Petition
If not allowed, please delete - I don’t think this is political, even though it is something that I think at least needs a debate in Parliament. As this has been highlighted on the TV and by Martin Lewis himself, I think it should be given some legs. If Martin wants to raise awareness of this it would be great, but I am trying to get the powers that be to discuss the decoupling of electricity prices from the gas price. The current marginal pricing system worked well when we didn’t have renewables generating most of our electricity but that’s now changed. If you would like to support the petition, please do so here (it’s not got enough to live on the parliament website at the time of posting but hopefully that can change):

Your link takes you straight to the signatures page so you have no idea what you are signing for.

It's because it doesn't have any sponsors yet
Agree it's a strange way to do it - as you say, the first signatories would have no idea what they are signing for. The petition could be for anything.
Presumably they expect the creator to get a few friends to sign at the start? Odd process for sure.
It also personally identifies the OP which is against forum rules (but then I'm not sure what usually happens with regards to Petitions since you can't really avoid it unless you share someone else's petition)?
Know what you don't0 -
I'll sign it once it's up but I'm not signing something I can't read about first.

You do realize since 2015 auction - renewables are already decoupled from the price of gas generation ?
Via CfD contracts.
But old renewables were thought to be making larger profits during the Ukraine crisis - and so subject Electricity Generator's Levy.
Ironically set for profits above £75/Mwh - and the latest round of Cfd llicense auctions for offshore wind - in ar7 - paying a higher £91/MWh - plus indexing for 20 years.

You don't like the current system, fair enough, but what would you replace it with? Any replacement has to deal with varying loads linked to varying costs and capacity of generation, and allow enough profit to allow for future investment. It needs to support both generators and consumers in a balanced and proportional way, what do you suggest?

Apologies, I hate the way the petition website doesn’t show what you’re signing

What I would suggest is that the energy is paid for based on the generating source, so if you’re doing cost plus, that’s an immediately obvious reduction. Currently gas is the highest cost of generation, whereas onshore wind is the cheapest so if an energy company can pick up as much electricity from onshore wind as they can, they will make more profit but equally pass on those savings to consumers. The regulators would need to monitor closely of course

Not as far as I’m aware. The marginal pricing system is still in place, something that was also highlighted in Parliament today by Dr Ellie Chowns

I know, apologies. Will post a link to the actual petition if I can get enough sponsors

The link can't be broken. The government signed legally binding contracts about how energy would be priced. For the government to break the link it would have to rip up commercial contracts it had signed. A reputational disaster for the govt. that would see immediate legal action and probably be blocked or require compensation for the suppliers.
As for Martin Lewis, didn't he argue against the new system and wanted to keep the old problematic system going because at the time it was cheaper? My memory might be wrong on that.
