Stranded passenger
Hi all, I need some advice on a situation following a flight cancellation.
My Qatar Airways returned light from Kathmandu to London on 1st March was cancelled, and I ended up being stranded in Kathmandu for 10 nights with no proper support or alternative provided.
To avoid further delays and potential conflict-area routes, I had to purchase a new ticket with Thai Airways and finally returned to London on 11th March. The new ticket cost nearly three times my original fare.
As a result:
I lost income because those extra days are now recorded as unpaid leave (I had already used all my annual leave)
I also incurred significant additional travel / local costs
I have requested a refund for the original cancelled ticket from Qatar Airways. What compensation I may be entitled?

None, Qatar airways arent the one that started the war.
Was it a package holiday you were on or had you booked elements separately?
Assuming its separate then had they rerouted you, which would probably have been via Doha, then they may have been responsible for basic accommodation and subsistence but not lost wages or compensation. Your choice to cancel and make your own arrangements makes them responsible for a refund of the unused part of your ticket.

Unfortunately no compensation- just a refund of the unused ticket(s)

Unless they paid for high risk travel insurance (not many people do), then my guess would be they will at best be only part covered, and maybe not be covered at all. Depends if they have the usual "acts of war, terrorism, and civil unrest" clauses as these are not typically covered in standard travel insurance.
This might be a useful link for the OP and insurance :-

Unfortunately Qatar Airways, being a non-UK, non-EU airline have no responsibility under EU261 or UK261 for flights that depart outside the EU or UK. This means you are relying on the goodwill of the airline. QR have a great product as an airline, but poor customer service, so you are unlikely to get anything from them other than a refund of the flight that was cancelled.
