I stopped keeping a separate record of my bank balance years ago, I just look at my banking app every time I buy something to see what the balance is. I did get stopped after using a self checkout once and just showed them the transaction in the banking app.

I think that’s where the problem is, not the payment method per se, for those that need receipts either for expense claims or tracking. If supermarket you could realistically have items for food/clothing/gifts/entertainment/home improvement in the same transaction, so a total in a banking app isn’t a lot of use. The only app I have on my phone is Curve but I only use that if there is a reward offer on or I feel the need to have visibility on the transactions while out, so I wouldn’t usually have an app record to show if not given a receipt (due to Curve occasionally dropping the hold their end then debiting the card again before the funds they originally held are released back onto it.)
I can’t really blame them for making it a push button option given the number of receipts that seemed to be left hanging out of the machines/on the floor etc - but a little longer to select the option amongst packing the shopping would be good. My local Sainsbury’s now have a scan your receipt on the barrier to get out so at least that guarantees a receipt.

Lidl, M&S and John Lewis (but not Waitrose) seem to be streets ahead of other retailers when it comes to receipts. Whilst you can still get paper receipts, you can opt for getting them electronically / get them electronically automatically.
Saves trees and allows you to find your receipts easily, months after the event (helpful e.g. when you get an unwarranted parking fine, or when you have a warranty or other claim)

This article explains the myth that using less paper "saves trees":

I won’t engage in an argument with anyone who questions the importance of saving trees. Suffice to say that paper is made from wood pulp, so less demand for paper = fewer trees cut down.

I didn't question the importance of saving trees. You've made that up.
Try reading the article and you will learn how the forestry industry and the paper supply chain work. Then if you can comprehend it you might not post such ill-informed comments.
Have a lovely day. 🙂

According to that article, paper is NOT made from wood pulp, but from recycled cardboard (which is made from pulped sawdust and woodchips), so trees are cut down to produce lumber, not paper. That's in Canada, may be different over here.
