MSE News: Banks and payment firms can now scrap the £100 contactless limit – here's what's happening

I don't ever use contactless. Half the places that I did use it didn't give me a receipt automatically or ask if I wanted a receipt. That puts the onus on me to have to ask for a receipt and if I forget obviously I didn't get one. So, it's chip & pin every time for me, guaranteed paper receipt and I can easily afford the extra 15 or 20 seconds it takes to make a payment.

I don't see the need for receipts most of time time. I can just look in my banking app to see everything I've spent and I get a notification whenever I spend anything so I can easily check that it's the right amount.

Most banks have put it up to £100 which is the maximum allowed, so if there was no limit I can't see any reason why they wouldn't put it higher. Any decent bank will let you change it in the app so an increased limit shouldn't be any concern to anyone. I've just put mine down to £30 as I always pay with my phone.

There's a person who's never had to claim exes from their employer. Those paper receipts are precious.

No a lot of people don't use a phone to pay cards are still very much in use.
I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
The windows are small and the walls almost bare,
There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.2 -
I’m similar
I can’t remember the last time I used stamps to pay for anything. I always use my notes or my coins, but I always carry a couple of cheques as backup.😄1 -
Most of my in person payments are less than £20, so I have set the contactless limit on my front line card to £20. My backup card has its contactless limit set to £0. I very rarely have to use that card. I cannot set the contactless limit on my Barclaycard Rewards card, so it rarely sees the light of day. I should be compensated if any of my cards are lost or stolen, but it is good to be able to shrug it off if that happens.

I think receipts are pretty automatic for contactless nowadays, it's Apple/Samsung/Google pay where that doesn't happen (parent is a fan but complains about the lack of receipts.) The exception is a bar, where if you ask for a receipt you tend to get the card receipt and not an itemised record of the items (I guess they can just press a button on the card terminal to produce the former.)
We shouldn't presume that a thief isn't willing to resort to violence to steal a device. We don't know their circumstances and for some, turning it from a crime that produces crime number and nothing else to one that leads to jail time may be a welcome relief; at least there they have a roof over their head and are fed and warm.
Personally, I can see no reason to use phone pay. My large purchases are overwhelmingly made online as you have more rights then. Even if my bank does not offer a customisable limit, I can set one by keeping only a hundred or whatever it might be in the account. My phone is worth more than that and I feel rushing to make a payment and clear the checkout for the next customer is more likely to lead to a situation where the phone may be dropped and the screen broken. No one is going to pay for that whereas a first card replacement is usually free or say £10 if not. Phone insurance is likely to cost more than that per month and come with an excess.
Everyone should use whatever payment method best suits their circumstances. Forcing people into phone pay because they don't want an unlimited contactless limit would start to feel like victim blaming; it should be easy enough for banks to offer a customisable limit by now.

I can most definitely assure you that receipts are not automatic for contactless payments. I guess it kinda depends on where you are shopping.....and where my wife shops auto receipts are a very, very rare thing.

I use the self service checkouts. Automatic receipts seem to be a thing of the past. Nowadays, I am always asked whether I want a receipt. I occasionally forget to press the "yes" button, or the printer is out of paper. It is best to have a receipt in case you get stopped by security, and it makes it easier to update your account balance. Nonetheless, logging into my account to get an up to date balance is not a big problem.
