    Without pressing any buttons on the meter it should normally show what rate it is on.

    Normally during day would be R1

    Just looking at the data from you IHD:

    If the costs shown are accurate then the worst month for expenditure was January (as you might expect) and the cost of January's electricity was £335. The average cost over the year looks to be about £200 per month (as a rough estimate). So if the account was not in debit it looks as if your mother would need to pay about £200 per month to cover her electricity usage.

    If your mother continued to pay £370 per month that should bring her debit down to zero in just a few months over the summer. I can't see any justification for BG wanting to increase her direct debit. Send BG the first picture of your IHD showing expenditure by month and ask them to leave the direct debit as it was. Then re-instate it before they decide to switch you mother to a more expensive tariff.
