Money Moral Dilemma: Who should pay the bar bill for the hotel stay I got my mum and dad?

This moral money dilemma doesn’t make sense. I understood that it’s standard practice for hotels to reserve an amount on a credit or debit card at check in to cover unpaid bills. The idea that the hotel permitted your parents to check out without paying is completely baffling!

I have 3 sons, and I would be delighted to receive a thoughtful gift like you gave your parents.

However, there is absolutely no way whatsoever, that I would ask or expect them to pick up the tab for our bar bill or anything else.

Your parents should be ashamed of themselves and appreciate your kind gift, which wouldn't have been cheap to start with. Anyone going to stay in a hotel or likewise, always checks the price of drink - they must have known how much they were drinking.

You need to have a conversation with them about this!

I think I'd start from a position of….

I was paying for your room / bed and breakfast or whatever it was.

I didn't intend to cover your extras and can't really afford to.

If it gets tesnse and you can afford it, then pay, but next time youdo something generous, maybe clarify exactly what you are giving. Personally I think they're taking the mick a bit.

What if they'd drunk vintage Brandy every night and the bar bill was £40,000 !
