What are these patches on my wall?

Good advice WIAWSNB, but it's better to go over the wall with the roller without loading it to 'roll it off', in the same way you 'lay it off' with a paint brush.

My patches were more lots of dings and dents. Screws I removed etc.
I used a fine filler bought from the local DIY store, ditto a scraper and chose a sunny day to fill in, sand down with a sanding block so that I could easily get it flat with the original surface, fine paper as WIAW suggests. Like new.
I've also done large ones like yours on a wall where a decorator gouged plaster on a brick wall.
Put some music or podcast on and set to. It's very satisfying when done.
Did the skirting boards too. Not just to look better but it makes dusting a whole lot quicker and cleaner when there's no dents to catch the dust 😉
I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!
viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on
The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

Good advice about the sunny day. It’s remarkable how the sun shining across a wall shows up the lumps and bumps….not good if you’ve just finished 😬

Critical light from a torch etc will also show up any defects. Any angle of 15 degrees or less.

It's going to need filling and sheet sanding to get it back to 99% . I'd take the high spots off before filling.
It costs a bit more but the Toupret ready to use code 812PP at Screwfix works well for this with a plastering trowel. Once level id probably given it a roll with Guardz before painting.
I'm not a decorator but I fixed similar walls on a whole house for someone a few years back. I lost count how long it took.
I use a 6ft led baton light at one end of the wall then the other to show the spots.
