    It should not be floating around inside the box like that.

    It isn't! The meter box is embedded about 6" into the stone wall, but the incoming cable is surface mounted. There wouldn't be enough room to bend the cables if the service head were mounted on the backboard, so whoever fitted the cabinet worked around the problem by fixing a bit of chipboard at an angle for the service head to sit on. It's probably been like that since sometime last century.

    The meter exchange label has now disappeared completely, not a skerrick left. Luckily I have a copy of the meter engineer's photo of it.
